Fritz: That’s why Kruse’s return to Werder failed–
It would have been the most spectacular return campaign of this Bundesliga summer…
A few weeks ago, Werder dealt intensively with a transfer from Wolfsburg’s Max Kruse (34/ BILD reported). After Wölfe coach Florian Kohfeldt (39) left at the end of the season, the former Bremen top star could have left the club for a manageable fee (about one million euros) thanks to a “Kohfeldt clause”. Werder knocked, but a second return to the Weser did not materialize.
Clemens Fritz (41), Werder’s head of professional football, confirms the interest for the first time and gives the reasons for the failure of the return. Fritz: “It is basically our job to deal with all possibilities and eventualities and of course we also knew about this clause. We’ve discussed it internally. But it’s not like he could have moved on a free transfer, the salary and the squad structure also have to be taken into account…”
Kruse (85 games, 32 goals for Werder) was too expensive in the end, but the player himself is said not to have felt any increased interest in a third engagement in Bremen. And so the topic was soon off the table and Werder signed the more defensive Jens Stage from FC Copenhagen for midfield.
For a reunion between Werder and Kruse will come on Saturday (3.30 p.m.) in the duel in Wolfsburg. Even if the VfL star will initially sit on the bench. ” Max certainly has some catching up to do,” says head coach Niko Kovac (50). “Therefore it will not start from the beginning.”
