Welsh Conservatives Leader Says Wales Should Follow England’s End Date For Covid Rules

The conservative Welsh government would end all social distancing measures on June 21 if the decision was backed by science, the party leader in the Senedd said.

Andrew RT Davies said it would be “sensible” to align Wales’s easing of restrictions with England’s if he led the country after the May 6 Welsh parliamentary elections.

Labor Prime Minister Mark Drakeford’s roadmap runs through “the end of May” with the possible reopening of indoor hospitality and vacation rentals, but no date has been given for the possible end of social distancing rules.

On Sunday, Davies told the BBC’s Andrew Marr program that he would follow Boris Johnson’s lead in committing to a June 21 date to end restrictions in England “if science shows that is the case.”

“In the absence of the Welsh government having a roadmap that is coherent and satisfies the people of Wales wherever they live, we think it makes sense to align those priorities with other parts of the UK where science is piling up,” he said. .

“So it’s science-driven, data-driven, and if that’s the case on June 21, that’s what we’d like to do.”

Davies said the Welsh government had taken “different approaches for the sake of being different, rather than science pointing to common ground” with the rest of the UK when it comes to coronavirus restrictions.

He pointed to hospitality, where rules in England have allowed pubs, restaurants and cafes to reopen for outdoor services on April 12, while people in Wales have to wait until April 26.

Mr Davies also criticized the decision not to resume face-to-face teaching during Years 7, 8 and 9 in Wales until April 12, despite the fact that all age groups in England returned to schools as of 8 April. March.
