Welcome little ‘Pistachio’: puppy with green fur born in Sardinia, “the color of hope” | The best thing about the web

A very striking rarity, and so Reuters news agency, among others, took a look at the farm on the island of Sardinia. “Green is the symbol of hope and happiness,” sheep farmer Mallocci told the news agency. “Perhaps it is predestined that our Pistachio can put a smile on people’s faces in these difficult corona times.”

‘Pistachio’ or ‘Pistachio’, yes. That is the name of this cute little dog with a special green appearance. The glitzy four-legged friend saw the light of day on October 9, along with four other puppies who had all been given the white fur from their mom.

It is very rare for a dog to be born with a green coat. It is thought to happen when puppies with paler coats come into contact with a green bile dye in their mothers womb, a pigment called biliverdin. That is the same pigment that causes the green color in bruises.

The green color of Pistachio is not forever. Ever since he was born, his bright green coat has faded day after day, and will continue to fade as he ages.

Pistache’s brothers and sisters have all been adopted in the meantime and will leave for their new owners when the time is right. Pistachio stays on Cristian Mallocci’s farm in Pattada. He will be trained there to herd sheep just like his mama.
