Weghorst found the duel without an audience with Wolfsburg ‘really terrible’ NOW

Wout Weghorst would not want to play another match without an audience. The Dutch striker played a Europa League duel with Shakhtar Donetsk without spectators on Thursday with VfL Wolfsburg because of the outbreak of the corona virus.

“It was really terrible”, Weghorst looks at on Friday FOX Sports back at that game. “If you have to play football like that, I would rather not play football. Very strange, it was also the first time for me. A very strange sensation, but it was nothing.”

Weghorst also grew into the schlemiel at Wolfsburg by shooting a penalty kick high just before half-time. Partly because of this, the Germans lost the first leg in the eighth finals with 1-2.

“I always take them with Wolfsburg, but now it went completely wrong,” he said about the penalty. “I made eleven in a row, but my standing leg slipped. I shot my standing leg and then the ball flew about ten meters into the air.”

Initially, Wolfsburg would also play without spectators this weekend in the Bundesliga, but the Deutsche Fussball Liga (DFL) decided to postpone all games on Friday until April 2.

‘Of course we would have preferred to continue playing football’

That decision ensured that trainer Peter Bosz played the last game with the audience on Thursday with Bayer Leverkusen. In a packed Ibrox Stadium, the Germans won 1-3 at Rangers to book their ninth victory in ten games.

“We would therefore have preferred to continue playing football,” Bosz tells FOX Sports. “But I fully understand that the games are postponed when you see what’s going on.”

“We will meet with the trainers tomorrow and then we will see how we should proceed. We do not know where we are working now, which makes it all a bit more complicated”, Bosz concludes.
