The snow could invite itself to very low altitude, probably to the plain, in particular on part of Hérault, Aveyron, Aude or even Pyrénées-Orientales, this Thursday, January 19.
Snow could creep in at very low altitudes, probably to the plainparticularly in part of Hérault, Aveyron, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. “This is a rather atypical configuration, with a depression which should deepen tomorrow afternoon in the Bay of Biscay, before sliding towards Roussillon during the night from Thursday to Friday. This depression will slip in the within a mass of cold air, which will allow the snow to fall lower and lower”, specify the site Weather Languedoc
The mistral blows at 30/40 km/h near the Rhône, while the tramontana blows at 70/90 km/h from Aude to the Pyrénées-Orientales. These winds, associated with the general northerly flow, will limit the rise in temperatures. The precipitation will invade 100% of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude and a very large part of the Hérault (with maximum intensity in the west of the department) in the evening and night, where they will last several hours.
Snow in the plain
Thanks to the land wind, the isothermal will be set up (it is a propagation of the cold air from the altitude towards the plain within the precipitating fall) which will allow the snow to fall quickly as far as the plains in the interior of Aude and Hérault, a little later in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
For there to be isothermie, explains the Weather Channel, two essential conditions must be met. Precipitation must be particularly intense and the wind must be nil or almost nil. While the temperature is still largely positive at the bottom of the valley, cold air is present at altitude. The intensification of precipitation will allow the cold air to descend gradually from the base of the clouds. The temperature can thus sometimes drop by more than 10°C in the space of an hour or two. As the temperature drops rapidly, the snow will progress towards the bottoms of the valleys and the plains.
According to Météo Languedoc, Prades, Quillan, Carcassonne then later Narbonne, Béziers and to a lesser extent Perpignan should be affected. On the Hérault and the Aude, it will be colder, which could promote snowflakes but in small quantities until the seaside during the night. It should snow in the interior of Aude and western Hérault (near the upper cantons, north of Béziers) or even in the interior of Roussillon. The Hérault is placed on orange alert for snow and ice.
Aude will also be on the alert orange snow ice. the prefecture calls for caution, especially on the A 61 motorway.
There should be nothing on the plains of Gard as well as in Montpellier, but a dusting near Vigan and Pic Saint-Loup and the first heights above Sète, 1 to 2 cm on the Lodève side as well as near Béziers, 2 to 5 cm in the north of Biterrois, locally 5 to 10 cm approaching Minervois and Espinouse.
