So far, only one observation station – Dagda – has tentatively started the meteorological winter, and on Sunday or at the beginning of the new week it can start elsewhere in the east of Latvia. A meteorological winter has occurred if the average air temperature does not exceed zero for five consecutive days.

At the end of November, the cyclone will bring some snow in most of Latvia, and rain is expected on the coast and in Kurzeme. Precipitation is expected in many places also on December 1.

After that, a strong anticyclone in Russia and Kazakhstan will have a big impact on the weather. It is expected that Latvia will be on the western side of the anticyclone for a long time, the wind of the south and south-east will be blowing and precipitation will be rare, but the sky will mostly be cloudy.

Persistent frost is expected in the east of Latvia, also in Latgale and part of Vidzeme the air temperature will probably be mostly below zero, while in the western and central regions of the country it will mostly fluctuate around zero, sometimes heat above +5 degrees is possible.

According to the current forecast of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the average air temperature in Latvia in December is expected to be about two degrees above normal, but January could be four degrees warmer than normal due to the intensification of Atlantic cyclones. December is expected to be drier, January – wetter than usual.
