Weather – Could be minus 25

– It will simply be cold all over the country, duty meteorologist Martin Granrød at the Meteorological Institute tells Dagbladet.

After a period of variable and unstable weather, the forecaster can now tell that we are heading into winter, with all that goes with it.

Early next week, Arctic air masses will arrive over Scandinavia, gradually cooling Norway.

And there’s no doubt it will be cold, says the meteorologist.

– If the forecast is correct, it’s pretty certain it will be much colder. Starting next week, the cold brings with it the north wind, which often leads to snow showers along the country’s coast. Most of the country lies a bit downwind and wants to stay dry, says Granrød.

The trend is changing

In November, heat records were set several times in Europe, also in Norway. This trend is now set to reverse, with several areas posting double-digit minus degrees.

In the areas where it tends to get colder, Finnmarksvidda and the interior of Eastern Norway, temperatures will be between -20 and -25 degrees by mid-week.

There will be mostly minimal rainfall over the country, but Finnmarksvidda, Møre and Romsdal, Trøndelag and Nordland can expect both sleet and snow from Monday.

“Typical Winter Weather”

The rest of the country will also experience an increase in sub-zero temperatures, but will remain mostly dry with light cloud cover.

– It is typical winter weather, cold and dry in most areas. At first it doesn’t look like there will be any more snow, but the snow that has arrived will stick around for quite a while, says Granrød.

In the central parts of eastern and western Norway, temperatures could drop to ten degrees below zero in the coming week. In the rest of western Norway and southern Norway, it is expected to drop to minus 20 degrees.

– Winter is at the right time this year and we will have a good start to December. The cold will slowly but surely increase, says Granrød.

Still hoping for a white Christmas

In other words, it’s hard to say who will be the weather winner this week. If you like cold weather and typical wintry weather, you may turn up your nose at Finnmarksvidda, but if you want to kick the last bit of warmth out of the sun, there are opportunities for that too.

Chances are the sun will shine through the cloud cover in Møre and Romsdal, Nordland and Trøndelag this weekend, or northward from Stadt in Western Norway and østafjells next week.

Even if it is too early to guarantee a white Christmas, there is still hope, says the meteorologist.

– There are still a couple of weeks left, a lot can happen in that time.

There will be cloud cover over much of the country this weekend and temperatures are already slowly but surely starting to rise in most places.

– If you really want more degrees, you should travel abroad, advises Granrød.
