The mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic announced the obligation to wear a mask in the two main shopping streets of the hyper-center due to the risk of the epidemic spreading. The perimeter could be extended in the coming days if necessary.

From Saturday August 15, the mask will be compulsory in certain streets of Bordeaux. The Gironde capital is not the first to take such measures against COVID-19.
►Wearing the mask compulsory in the two busiest streets and more if necessary
The mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic, in the presence of Martin Guespereau, delegated prefect for defense and security and Hélène Junqua, deputy director general of ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine, announced on Wednesday morning that wearing a mask is now compulsory in rue Sainte-Catherine and rue Porte-Dijeaux. A measure that will be applied by a prefectural decree.
These two streets are a veritable open-air shopping center.
Remember that wearing a mask had already been imposed during the deconfinement in these two shopping streets of the hyper-center. A measure that was lifted on June 25 a few days before the second round of municipal elections. The mayor of Bordeaux will be the guest on 19/20 in the regional news on Wednesday evening. Pierre Hurmic has already indicated that the perimeter of the wearing of the compulsory mask could be widened in the coming days if the health situation deteriorates.

► Positive cases on the rise
More and more large cities in France are opting for the wearing of compulsory masks in open public places in the face of the upsurge in positive cases of COVID-19. The Gironde is one of the 17 departments vulnerable to the epidemic and in Bordeaux, two clusters have been identified in the Chartrons neighborhoods (positive cases in an nursing home and a crèche in particular) and the Grand Parc.
The mayor of Bordeaux made this decision jointly with the Gironde prefecture and the ARS due to the recent evolution of the virus. Tuesday, Prime Minister Jean Castex, visiting the Montpellier University Hospital, called on the prefects to hear “as much as possible” the obligation to wear a mask outdoors, highlighting “an epidemiological situation of coronavirus which has been evolving in the wrong direction since two weeks”.
