Weak Corona Virus Can Be Destroyed by Ultraviolet Rays

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

domestic Minister Tito Karnavian claim corona virus (Covid-19) is classified as weak because it has a fat content that can be destroyed with 70 percent alcohol and artificial and natural ultraviolet rays, such as the sun.

“This virus is a fatty virus, so it is weak. The way to kill it is to destroy the RNA genetic material in the inside,” said Tito during the World Hand Washing with Soap National Campaign on Katadata Indonesia’s Youtube channel, Thursday (15/10).

“Some studies suggest that it can be destroyed by ultraviolet light. Good natural ultraviolet rays like the sun are the best,” he continued.

According to Tito, the corona virus can also die with alcohol above 70 percent and chemicals containing ether and chlorine. The ingredients, he said, have been contained in hand sanitizers to various types of soap.

“We can destroy this virus by destroying the fat membrane. If the blanket is destroyed, the virus will be destroyed,” said Tito.

Seeing this, Tito believes that hand washing is very important to reduce the spread of the corona virus. Washing hands, he said, must be done after handling objects that are indicated to be prone to spreading the virus.

“Because the hands are the part that is easy to talk about holding our nose and ears. There are droplets, aerosols, in our hands there is a virus, then we hold our nose and mouth. We will be exposed,” he said.

To date, the cumulative number of positive cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia has reached 349,160 people. Of these, 273,661 people were declared cured and 12,268 others died.

However, according to researchers in the field of Radio and Optical Technology, at the LIPI Electronics and Telecommunications Research Center, Yusuf Nur Wijayanto previously stated that Ultraviolet rays, especially ultraviolet C (UV-C) only play a role in weakening the virus.

He cited the opportunity to weaken the virus if UV-C rays were emitted in the right dose.

“UV-C rays can weaken microorganisms including bacteria, germs, viruses up to 99 percent,” said Yusuf to CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (16/6).

Yusuf said there had not been any experiments regarding the effect of UV-C rays on the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) virus. However, he conveyed some previous bacteria and viruses, for example SARS to MERS weakened 99 percent after receiving UV-C rays.

“But it can be predicted that (SARS-CoV-2) can also be weak, of course with a different dose of UV-C radiation from each virus,” he said.

Related to the work of UV-C rays, Taufik explained that this was done by emitting it on a surface of the object that wanted to be sterilized for some time. This step was taken to meet the minimum dose size to weaken the target virus.
