“We realized that airing every 55 minutes was not enough”

A classroom is no longer limited to a room, chairs, tables, a desk and a blackboard. The school environment has changed a lot since the pandemic. Everyone had to familiarize themselves with new objects and new rites such as wearing a mask, even in EPS, and the spraying, by the teacher, of a hydroalcoholic solution on the hands of each student before each lesson.

From now on, the teacher will also have to take a look at the CO2 sensor from time to time, placed on his desk and plugged into his computer.

The box indicates the temperature and the humidity level but it is the CO level 2 , which appears roughly in the center of the device, which should be monitored. “When it reads 800 ppm (parts per million, an indicator here measuring the number of CO particles 2 for a million air particles, editor’s note), it turns yellow. This is the signal to ventilate the room,” explains Alain Haar, principal of the Craffe college, who took out the device for a short demonstration.

It is not a virus scanner

“It is not a virus detector but a CO sensor 2 , that is, what we breathe out. We are only the two of us, but you will see, we will quickly reach 800. Imagine an entire class. »

However, not all classes are equipped. The College de la Craffe has been equipped with three devices, which the teachers share. It is for its pedagogical virtues on the teacher that the sensor is of interest.

“It is above all an indicator. We are used to airing every 55 minutes, during interclasses, and recess. With this device, we have realized that it is not enough”, underlines the principal.

Three devices per college

If the college has three devices, most other institutions currently have only one on average. Eventually, all the colleges in the department will also be equipped with three sensors. Cost of a device: 132 €.

“You should know that contaminations do not occur in class but in the canteen, when you no longer wear masks, specifies the principal. And with the Omicron variant, the positive cases explode. Twenty-two just this morning. »
