“We let Michael grow up, but we didn’t let LeBron”

While the GOAT debate is on everyone’s lips, Doc Rivers has decided to take his turn. You could say that the opinion of the Clippers coach is innovative, with a rather unusual angle.

With the release of The Last Dance a few weeks ago now, the GOAT debate has picked up again. Many vote Michael Jordan, when others prefer to give their voice to LeBron James.

And if we can appreciate the level of the two players, Doc Rivers points to a major difference between them. He confided in a recent interview, very complimentary to the King:

Michael Jordan took 7 years to win his first NBA title because he did not trust, he did not trust this system, he wanted to dominate alone, he did not understand the importance of believing in his teammates and use everyone. The difference between Michael and LeBron is that when Jordan joined the league, he surprised everyone with his talent.

When LeBron landed in the league, everyone expected him to be good. We let Michael grow up, but we didn’t let LeBron, and yet he still exceeded expectations. We should go back to the time and read the articles about LeBron’s arrival in the NBA, and he managed to do even better than what was announced. This is remarkable. He almost never gets hurt, he’s still there, he’s shot some of the most clutched shots in history, yet no one notices.

A refreshing opinion from Doc Rivers, because it raises an interesting point. LeBron came to the NBA in 2003 with unprecedented hype, which he managed to respond to and even surpassed. Jordan was not seen as a generational talent when he left college.

Doc Rivers highlights a difference in treatment between Jordan and LeBron. The Clippers’ coach makes an interesting point.
