We lend a hand to Northern Macedonia for the EU, but “without trading the national interest” (Overview)

Governments assure that they have no dispute on the subject

Bulgaria will “reach out” to Northern Macedonia to resolve the problems between the two countries and start its negotiations for membership in the European Union. However, this will not happen by “trading in our national interest”, both the government and the parties represented in parliament vowed yesterday.

We are reaching out to start a constructive dialogue, said Lena Borislavova, head of Prime Minister Kiril Petkov’s political cabinet. She assured that the Bulgarian position will continue to be well defended and argued, and the existing framework – upgraded by forming 5 working groups to discuss specific topics.

The preparation and organization of this process was the reason for the visit to Skopje of the Foreign Policy Adviser to the Prime Minister Kiril Petkov – Vessela Cherneva, on January 2, she said.

The topic of Northern Macedonia’s membership in the EU was widely discussed in parliament, but under the sign of the statement of ITN leader Slavi Trifonov on Facebook that if the US and the EU insist on lifting the veto on Macedonians, we must insist on us to drop American visas and enter Schengen. The ruling majority parties denied that there was a rift in the coalition over his statement, but without exception insisted that “the national interest should not be traded.”

“There can be no differences in the coalition regarding the Republic of Northern Macedonia. It is possible only if someone decides that the position of Bulgaria should be changed by the way it is, but

I deeply doubt that anyone will spoil it

the coalition agreement because of that “,

commented Trishko Yordanov, Trifonov’s deputy at the ITN. He insisted that the visa and Schengen problem still needs to be resolved. And he was indignant that Trifonov’s post was simply not read carefully.

However, the fewer statuses on the topic, the better, BSP MP Alexander Simov commented. He reiterated the position of his colleague Christian Vigenin that we should stop improvisations, because they can only spoil our united position.

Not to trade our relations with the EU and Northern Macedonia, called the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from “We continue the change” Miroslav Ivanov.

“We must stay within the framework agreed in the coalition agreement – to expand the dialogue with the PCM. We need to strengthen our economic cooperation, and the Prime Minister has repeatedly mentioned,

to build at last

this Skopje-Sofia railway line,

“possibly consider opening an airline,” he said.

“Bulgarian history, Bulgarian culture and our national interest are not subject to trade,” said the largest opposition party GERB.

“Obviously there is not only chaos, but also a lack of ideas on how to resolve the negotiation issue with RS Macedonia. This leads to a dead end for the Bulgarian government. The bigger problem is that we learn what is happening in the negotiation process from foreign media, and not from official representatives of the Bulgarian state “, MP Hristo Gadzhev was indignant.
