We did not receive the support we expected from the Civic Platform senators

The form of cooperation in the Senate, which lasted for a year in the Senate majority formed after the 2019 elections, ended when the so-called “Fridays for animals”, when we did not receive the support we expected from the Civic Platform senators – emphasized PSL senator Jan Filip Libicki.

“Gazeta Polska Codziennie” recently wrote that PSL activists claim that the formula of cooperation in the Senate of the groups opposing the government has ended.

Cooperation with PiS?

If PiS senators come to us with a sensible draft, we will not reject it in advance just because the idea comes from the ruling party

– said Senator Libicki, quoted in “GPC”.

The senator explained that the PSL generally voted “hand in hand” with the Civic Coalition.

However, when the so-called five for animals, we did not receive the support of KO senators. (…). Now our KO support will be conditional, we will consider each proposal separately and make decisions on specific issues. It all depends on what the proposals will be

Libicki told the daily.

The formula of cooperation with the PO has run out

Libicki, when asked by PAP about how the cooperation between PSL and PO senators in the Senate would continue, replied that “this form of cooperation in the upper house, which lasted for a year after the 2019 elections, ended at the time of the proceedings, so called “Animal Fridays” “.

We did not receive such support from the senators of the Civic Platform as we expected. It was a basic law for us and therefore a certain stage, a certain form of cooperation, has ended. And now the question is what will happen next

– said the PSL senator.

According to him, a certain “swallow” he sees in this matter is the Tuesday meeting of PSL President Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Piotr Zgorzelski with Senate Marshal Tomasz Grodzki and representatives of PO.

Steps have been taken to remedy the situation. There are two steps: first, the appointment of a coordinating council with representatives of all parties forming the majority in the Senate, to agree among themselves which laws are important to whom, and that it would not be the case that PSL amendments are supported by, for example, 3 to 5 votes. which is unacceptable

Libicki said.

And the second step – he added – is the PSL’s proposal to include Poland’s membership in the European Union in the constitution.

So as to prevent an uncontrolled polexit to which our PiS leads

Libicki noted.

Grodzki needs time

He emphasized that Marshal Grodzki asked for time to reflect on this matter.

It has to be agreed in the PO’s governing body, which is understandable, but we will also expect it not to last too long. We assume that this consultation will be immediate and that Marshal Grodzki will take energetic steps to present such a proposal.

Libicki said.

The senator recalled that President Andrzej Duda also proposed to enter Poland’s membership in the EU on May 3, 2019.

I understand that after dealing with the most important issue for Poles and the president, which is the opening of the ski slopes, the time will come for the president to become involved in an equally important matter, which he declared on May 3, 2019, and that he would support the idea of PSL presented by the Senate

Libicki said.

On Tuesday, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Piotr Zgorzelski (PSL) said on TVN24 that during a meeting with Speaker of the Senate Tomasz Grodzki he proposed the appointment of a “coalition council” that would explain the misunderstandings in the Senate majority and that the Senate should initiate the entry into the constitution of Poland’s membership in EU.

The Speaker of the Senate, when asked on TVN24 on Tuesday about the PSL’s proposal to include Poland’s membership in the EU in the constitution, assessed that “this is a very interesting proposal.” Many EU countries already have such provisions, ”said Grodzki. However, he pointed out that to amend the constitution it is necessary, inter alia, a two-thirds majority in the Sejm.

We will talk seriously with the leaders of political formations on this subject and, as the Marshal of the Senate, I have made a commitment that I will try to play a useful role in it

– declared the Speaker of the Senate.
