We cannot close Turów, the Polish president said

The Czechia sued Poland in an EU court for violating EU regulations during the extension of mining in the mine. On Monday, the court ordered Poland to pay a fine of half a million euros a day (about 12.7 million CZK) to the European Commission for failing to comply with an interim measure to stop mining at the mine immediately, pending a final decision on the matter. Nevertheless, the Polish government refused to suspend mining.

When asked whether the dispute over Turów is part of a “broader game”, Duda replied that he did not know and let everyone answer this question themselves.

“I say the facts. If we are to be energy self-sufficient, the only way is to continue mining and supplying the power plant. It supplies electricity to a huge part of Poland, just the one in the southwest,” the president said.

He admitted that “it is not yet possible” to reach an agreement with the Czechs. “I know that various attempts have been made. I know that the Prime Minister (Mateusz Morawiecki) has made great efforts in negotiations on this issue. But it is clear that no agreement has yet been reached, which unfortunately also shows a certain sad reality in relations with our neighbor. “he said.

Asked whether the failed negotiations could be described as a diplomatic weakness, he replied that everything could be described as a diplomatic weakness, but the fact was that in an honest neighborhood one could find a way out – and this is not the case. Duda added that he encourages dialogue all the time and thinks that it should be negotiated and a solution sought. According to him, the whole situation is very special.
