At a session of the United Kingdom’s foreign affairs committee, the official described the situation of the epidemic as “grotesque”, considering that the world is still far from seeing the end of this global public health crisis.
«It is much worse than any science fiction about pandemics. This is really serious, we are not even in the middle of the epidemic. We are still at the beginning », warned Nabarro on Tuesday. “We are starting to see the damage this is going to do to the world.”
The WHO special envoy also said: “And it is getting more and more unpleasant as we enter this stage, particularly in Europe, of a resurgence” of infections. “None of us consider the current situation anything other than horrible, grotesque, really embarrassing,” he added.
For Nabarro, this “is a terrible situation, a health problem so out of control that it is driving the world, not just into a recession, but into a huge economic contraction that will probably double the number of poor, double the number of malnourished and bankrupt hundreds of millions of small businesses’.
Globally, the Covid-19 pandemic has infected more than 29.5 million people, causing even more than 935,000 fatalities, according to official data from Jonhs Hopkins University in the United States.
