The COVID-19 pandemic the country is going through has worsened the crisis of indigenous people Wayuu in the department of La Guajira, according to the complaints of the different leaders of this ethnic group.
“The current situation of the Wayuú indigenous people in the indigenous territories in this time of pandemic is totally worrying and chaotic, we can speak of state abandonment in its maximum expression”said José Silva, representative of the NGO Nación Wayuú.
According to the most recent epidemiological map of La Guajira, with a cutoff of week 27, in the department there have been 204 cases of children with low birth weight and 522 of acute malnutrition in children under 5 years of age, being the municipalities of Uribia, Maicao and Riohacha, the most affected.

“Not only are children dying from malnutrition, but now, our elderly and young people are dying with diseases possibly associated with COVID-19,” he added.
The NGO Nación Wayuú, presumes that, in the department of La Guajira, more than 20 minors have died from causes associated with malnutrition, so far this year. But according to the same NGO, the figure could be higher due to difficult access to communities in Alta Guajira.
