Water will soon become more expensive across the republic. How much more will it cost us?

From next year, Czechs will have to dig deeper into their wallets. Some households will pay up to several hundred more for water than this year. People are disappointed – most argue that even the current price of water is not low. Others are not sure where the extra money will come from.

From January next year, Pilsen expects to increase the price of water and sewerage by less than five percent. The locals will pay less than 90 crowns without tax for a cubic meter. For example, Kroměříž or Trutnov will increase in price by five percent. From the new year there will cost a cubic meter over 83 crowns.

“This is basically mainly a consequence of the coronavirus crisis, when there is a decrease in drinking water consumption, as well as the fact that less wastewater is drained,” explains Dana Veselá, a spokeswoman for Pilsen waterworks.

From the new year, water will also become more expensive in Pardubice, it will be four percent. Customers pay 98 crowns for a cubic meter. The decline in water consumption was felt by water companies during the coronavirus, especially in restaurants, schools or closed sports grounds – by several tens of thousands of cubic meters.

“The inhabitants of the city of Brno will pay in 2021 for one cubic meter, that is a thousand liters of water, 85 crowns and 21 pennies,” said Renata Hermanová, a spokeswoman for Brno Waterworks and Sewerage.

Jihlava pays almost a hundred crowns for a cubic meter of water. No increase is planned there next year. The national average of water and sewage is around 90 crowns per cubic meter. The capital is still waiting for price negotiations. But it is already clear that the price of water will rise at least by inflation.

“It has not yet been decided in the capital to increase water and sewerage prices for next year.

Apart from the capital, Moravská vodárenská, for example, is still not clear. It includes the cities of Olomouc, Prostějov and Zlín. The Ostrava Water Company is also awaiting negotiations.
