Water in the Main too warm: “Warning” from the government of Lower Franconia

According to the government, the water temperature threshold of 26 degrees Celsius has been exceeded for more than three hours at the Erlabrunn measuring station since Sunday (09.08.20). The government expects that the limit value will soon be exceeded at the measuring station in Kahl am Main.

No change in weather in sight

Since it should remain hot in the coming days and nights, a further increase in water temperatures must be expected. The oxygen content at the Kahl am Main measuring station is at a low, but still uncritical level. The flow of the Main at the Trunstadt measuring station (district of Bamberg) is low and shows a further downward trend, according to the government of Lower Franconia. The district offices and city administrations have already been asked to notify all sewage treatment plants and industrial companies that discharge their wastewater into the Main.

Work in the river must be stopped

According to the specifications of the alarm plan, everything is to be avoided in the Main from Würzburg downstream in the following days that could lead to additional pollution. This applies, for example, to mud clearance and dredging in the Main and its tributaries, unless they are absolutely necessary to maintain the safety and ease of traffic on the waterway. Decommissioning sewage treatment plants for revision work is not permitted. According to the government of Lower Franconia, weir or turbine ventilation is currently not necessary.
