Water board accidentally mows only habitat rare butterfly

“We recognize that we have made a mistake and mowed in a place with protected flora and fauna,” the water board tweeted. “Together with the contractor, we conduct research into the cause and impact. We consider Limburg flora and fauna to be very important.”

Declaration

The Butterfly Foundation discovered the blunder and went looking for those responsible. The foundation has since filed a report against the water board, reports the regional news site 1Limburg.

According to the Butterfly Foundation, the dark burnish blue disappeared from the Netherlands sometime around 1970. Although the species was reintroduced in 1990 in a nature reserve near Den Bosch, the animal has disappeared there too.

Spontaneously established

In 2001 the dark burnish blue spontaneously settled in the berm near Posterholt, probably from Germany.

To protect butterflies, however, it is important to mow in their habitat, but in the right way and at the right times, the Butterfly Foundation reports.
