The Christmas adventure film for the whole family, which will hit the screens in December 2020, tells the story of ten-year-old Paul, whose family has moved to an exotic country because his father is a geologist and works in gold mines. Living in a distant land proves to be a serious test of parental relationships, and as the holidays approach, Paula realizes that only the miracle of Christmas can save the family. But what if there is no winter? It turns out that Paul’s new friend Ahim has heard that Santa Claus is also found in the thickets of the jungle. The plan is in hand! However, children do not realize how dangerous and exciting adventures await them on the way – underground caves, jungle spirits, cannibals, unusual animals and much more…

In the film, the father is played by Māris Olte, the mother by Inga Alsiņa, the eldest sister by Elizabete Liepa, and the determined decade Paul – Rebeka Šuksta. Indonesian Braiden Pablo Eskobar has taken on the role of her reliable companion and friend Ahima. The producer of the film and the author of the idea is Roberts Vinovskis, the author of the script is Lote Eglīte, the director of the film is Estonian Jāks Kilmi, the cameraman is Aigars Sērmukšs.

The main character Rebecca Shuksta, who plays Paul in the film, shares her impressions of the filming: “It was very hot there. Really very hot, it was pretty crazy. But as a real actress, I had my own assistant who walked everywhere to hold a big umbrella over my head and give me a drink. He was distracted, and his mother had to look after him all the time. I also prepared to eat separately, because they do not know why they eat very spicy foods. I had never thought that filming days were so long – sometimes I had to get up at four in the morning to catch the right light, and the filming day lasted many hours. I probably wouldn’t want to become an actress – it’s very difficult. You have to jump in the water, you have to fall into a pit, and everything has to be repeated many times… But in general it was cool on the set and everyone was very nice. I can’t even imagine that I played the lead role in the film and now I’m going to be shown in the cinema. In Indonesia, it was a job for me – like everyone else. I thought about it for the first time when I told the class how it went, showed a video, and everyone started calling me Paul! ”

Māris Olte, who portrays the father of the family in the film, tells about the experience in the filming area: “Getting to a foreign side, almost on the opposite side of the globe, is exotic by definition. In a land formed by completely different processes, not a glacier like ours. The Sultanate of Yogyakarta, so called this place, is small, incredible and incomprehensible. But about the experience of filming – waiting in it was the most tricky thing. Waiting for a fish, waiting for a baby, waiting for a miracle is easier than waiting for your turn to film. The second is those repetitions. I couldn’t imagine that filming a simple scene required so many different angles and repetitions. Well, I’m not used to arguing identically with a “wife” ten or twenty times in a row or as much as the director tells me to. I admire the film crew’s ability to be a single instrument and develop all the nuances of the script. I got into the first film, I will see which mosque will have to be played in the next one. ”

Asked about the experience of filming in such exotic places, the film’s producer Roberts Vinovskis says: “Of course, it was to some extent an adventure – and as a result this will be the first Latvian film to be shot almost entirely from Latvia. Of course, it was not without adventures and weddings, and the time will come for these stories, but we were very lucky with the local partners and especially with the film crew. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who did their job with great dedication in these extremely extreme conditions for us! A two-month trip to a foreign cultural space and unusually high temperatures is a real challenge. I especially want to highlight our new actresses: for them it was a brand new experience, but endurance and acting are equal to the performance of professional actors. ”

The family feature film “Christmas in the Jungle”, in collaboration with Latvia’s “Studija Lokomotīve” and Estonia’s “Stellar Films”, is being produced with the financial support of the Latvian National Film Center, the Estonian Film Institute and ACME Film. The film is being made as part of the National Film Centre’s children’s, youth and family film program, which continues the Centennial Film Program.
