Washington Medical School “Corona 19 breaks through blood-brain barrier”… Thesis on Nature Neuroscience

[아시아경제 이기민 기자] Animal experiments show that the novel coronavirus (Corona 19) crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which blocks foreign substances in the brain.

It is noted that it can explain the reason why cognitive impairments such as brain fog occur in some patients with COVID-19.

According to major foreign media on the 21st, the results of this study conducted by researchers at Washington Medical University in the United States were recently published as a paper in’Nature Neuroscience’.

Brain fog refers to symptoms such as loss of concentration and memory, loss of appetite, fatigue, and depression while continuing a feeling of vagueness as if there is a fog in the head.

Looking at the summary of a paper published on the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the spike protein, which plays an important role in the cell infection of Corona 19, was also involved in inducing inflammation in the brain.

The first author of the paper, Professor William Banks of Medicine, said, “The brain seems to secrete cytokines and inflammation-causing by-products due to the inducing action of the spike protein.”

Brain inflammation is being blamed for brain fog. Researchers at the University of Birmingham in the UK published a paper in November last year that pointed out that inflammation of the brain neural circuit is associated with brain fog.
