As previously speculated, the Washington Football Team has split up with quarterback Alex Smith. Smith apparently does not want to end his career yet.
The team made the decision official on Friday. Corresponding rumors had already persisted over the past few weeks.
Washington saves nearly $ 15 million in Cap Space with the layoff. Washington would have over $ 50 million available and would move into the top 4 in terms of cap space for this offseason.
Smith had made an extraordinary comeback last season, from his severe leg injury to numerous surgeries, intermittent worry that he might lose his leg, to finally returning to the field as starting quarterback in Washington last season. He was then named “Comeback Player of the Year”.
Washington even made it into the playoffs in a weak division, but that Smith can at best still be a game manager became obvious during the course of the season.
The team from the capital has now officially risen to the quarterback carousel, according to reports, Washington had already bid on Matt Stafford, who ultimately brought the Los Angeles Rams from Detroit via Trade. A trade up in the draft also seems conceivable, and head coach Ron Rivera and Cam Newton may reunite. The current options in the squad would be Taylor Heinicke and Steven Montez.
Smith himself reportedly wants to continue his career. He could be a veteran backup option behind a young starter, possibly under his former college coach Urban Meyer in Jacksonville.
