Nate Herbig, a key offensive lineman for the Washington commanders, has unexpectedly announced his retirement from the NFL, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Monday. The team officially placed Herbig on the reserve/retired list Tuesday morning.

Herbig,27,joined the Commanders in the offseason,a move intended to strengthen the team’s interior offensive line. His decision marks the end of a five-year NFL career that saw him play for three different franchises.

The lineman began his professional career in 2019 as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. He later spent a season with the New York Jets before joining the pittsburgh Steelers for two seasons. Notably, his brother, Nick Herbig, was also drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Herbig’s career was impacted by injuries, as he finished both the 2022 season with the Jets and the 2024 season on injured reserve. Throughout his 61 NFL games, Herbig started 30 contests, including 12 with the Eagles in 2020 and 11 with the Steelers two years ago. He sustained a torn rotator cuff during the previous season.
