The newspaper wrote in November about a new study from Israel delivering bad news to men all over the world.
In an interview with Times of Israel comes Hagai Levine, one of the researchers behind the study, with a grim prediction – and a warning to the entire world.
Abdomen Rating: – Serves pork
Together with Professor Shanna Swan of the Icahn School of Medicine in New York, she found that sperm quality worldwide has decreased by 62% since 1973.
– Concerned
Now Levine is sounding the alarm both in terms of men’s fertility, men’s overall health – and not least our overall survival.
Low sperm quality is associated with an increased risk of chronic disease, testicular cancer, and a shorter lifespan.
– We should be both surprised and concerned about these findings, says Professor Hagai Levine, according to the Times of Israel.
Five years ago, Levine made headlines with a similar study that sounded the alarm about sperm quality in Western men.
Decreased by 62%.
The new study is much more comprehensive: This time the researchers looked at sperm counts from 1973 to 2018 and are looking at a total of 53 countries around the world.
When researchers began comparing materials from 1973 to the present, they discovered something frightening:
The number of sperms present in an average ejaculation decreased by 62%. The sperm concentration per millimeter dropped by 52% and is now around 50 million, according to the researchers.
Fortunately, it is above the limit set by the World Health Organization for low sperm concentration, which is 15 million per milliliter.
– It can threaten humanity
If sperm quality continues to decline as fast as it is now, Levine fears the average man will have 15 million in just a decade.
– We have a serious problem. If we don’t find a solution, it could threaten the survival of humanity, says the professor – and he calls for the world to act by reducing behaviors that could threaten reproduction.
Eat raw liver and testicles
While this study doesn’t delve into the causes of the plummeting sperm count, other researchers have linked the trend to obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and chemical exposure, among other things.
