Work stoppages will be there too Essen and Mülheim give – according to the Ruhrbahn, there are no buses and trains on Monday and Tuesday. A Verdi spokeswoman said that there would be widespread failures in the connections.

On Tuesday there will be further connection failures in some places. Then there is another collective bargaining conflict, namely the public service collective agreement (TVÖD). The local transport companies take over his remuneration agreement, so their employees will participate in the labor dispute over this contract. In Cologne, for example, there are no trams on Tuesday either. Regional trains and S-Bahn trains are not affected by the work stoppages.

The union demands better working conditions for the workforce. The maximum working time in the driving service is to decrease from 12 to 10 hours, the rest time after the end of the shift is to increase from 10 to 11 hours. “Despite the intensification of work due to the increasing volume of traffic and resulting from it consistently high numbers of sick people the employers have not yet approached us, ”said Peter Büddicker, Verdi Regional Head of Transport in North Rhine-Westphalia. “In order to secure the future of public transport, we urgently need more attractive framework conditions.”

Of the Warning strike affects all of NRW, however, the buses and trains will probably not fail in all parts of the country. In Dortmund, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, Bielefeld and Solingen should just the Customer centers of local transport companies on strike and not the travel connections.

The union demands nationwide uniform regulations for the employees in public transport in Germany regarding the compensation of overtime, the allowances for shift work and the promotion of young talent. At present, separate collective agreements are being negotiated with the municipal employers’ associations in each of the 16 federal states.

The Association of Municipal Employers’ Associations (VKA) had declared after the first round of warning strikes that it was “not responsible for conducting collective bargaining in local transport”. Tariff regulations could only be concluded in the respective federal states.

Warning strike call for all local public transport companies

Verdi emphasized that compared to the year 2000, the number of employees in local public transport had shrunk by 18 percent, while the number of passengers had increased by a quarter in the same period. Due to the stresses, there are above-average sickness rates and the accumulation of overtime. In addition, the tight schedule, high volume of traffic and increasing numbers of passengers made the breaks disappear. In addition, there are no allowances for shift work for the drivers.

All companies that fall under the local transport collective bargaining agreement in North Rhine-Westphalia are called to go on a warning strike, according to the union’s statement. The workers had shown last Tuesday that they were ready to go on a warning strike in large numbers.

As a result of the corona pandemic, the number of passengers on buses and trains has since fallen sharply. In the meantime, more people are using public transport again, but the figures from before the crisis will not be sufficient again. For example, the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn reports that the number of passengers is currently 70 percent of the figure in October last year. (red with dpa)
