Professor Roger Kirby, President-elect of the Royal Society of Medicine, warned that the second wave of Corona virus may be “completely different” from the first wave, and young people may be at great risk.
Another Kirby-SARS-CoV-2 “will definitely come this winter,” Kirby said.
This comes as news reports that Boris Johnson is concerned that a second “Covid-19” wave will hit the UK within two weeks.
His fears appear to have erupted as signs of yet another surge in cases sweeping Europe.
Professor Kirby, who yesterday hosted a major conference of experts and doctors to discuss what has been learned about the virus, indicated that the Prime Minister is right to be concerned, according to what was reported by “Russia Today”.
He cautioned that while the first Covid wave affected disproportionately the elderly, who have basic health conditions and ethnic minorities, the next wave could target a different group.
The retired surgeon explained that this was the case during the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918, in which an estimated 50 million people were killed.
He pointed out that the winter is coming and certainly a second wave of this virus will come with him. He added: “What we saw in 1918 was the change of the virus and the second wave was different from the first wave and affected a different group of people, especially young people.”
Professor Kirby stressed that overweight people may also be at a higher risk from the second wave of Corona virus.
He explained: “The message that this conference brought to patients all over the world is: If you want to protect yourself from the next second wave, getting physical fitness and losing weight is crucial.”
