Played on PS4
Though The division 2 Both the press and the audience liked it, just a couple of weeks later everyone seemed to forget about the game. First part also started not too successfully (of course, we are not talking about profit, but about quality), but the additions breathed new life into it. In the case of the sequel, the DLC came out quite unnoticed – no wonder, because these were free updates, so it was not worth it to demand something outstanding from them. Ubisoft tried to fix everything in the Warlords of New York paid add-on – to please the “oldies” with changes and content, and to interest the new audience, which in February purchased the original The Division 2 for a penny.
⇡ #Come back
One of the main drawbacks of the sequel was called a change in the scene – they say Washington is not suitable for New York from the first part. Well, claims have been heard, and we are returning to the largest US city. But do not rush to blame Ubisoft for the lazy “copy-paste” – the areas here are completely different. Lower Manhattan is to be explored, including its financial district and municipal center.
The city has changed beyond recognition, and it is not only a matter of changing the season and the absence of snow on the streets. The areas survived a severe hurricane, so partly New York turned into ruins. Destroyed buildings, damaged skyscrapers, cracked asphalt, broken trees – the atmosphere is almost post-apocalyptic. The map in the supplement is smaller than in the main game, but the points of interest, sights, and generally some interesting things are located closer to each other due to which we constantly stop and look around.
Much more emphasis is placed on the verticality of locations. It is full of secrets, places where you can climb somewhere, hidden boxes and much more. Containers with special technologies needed to improve skills never just lie on the ground – you need to look for ladders, ropes, somehow unusual cars and other ways to climb higher. Sometimes you have to shoot at electric shields, and on some doors from the back there are locks that can only be accessed from a certain point.
The latter is very common in story missions, which makes them especially fun when passing with friends. The scenery on these tasks, as always, is beyond praise: either you get into the courthouse, then you find yourself in a bank vault, or you try to get out of a burning high-rise building. In one of the episodes, the hero is sent to the subway, where you need not only to shoot with enemies, but also to watch the stones falling from above.
It’s a pity there is nothing to praise the plot for – neither in the first The Division they could make it interesting, neither in the second, nor in the supplement. Even the characters who returned from the first part do not cause emotions. What do you remember about Ray Benitez, besides the fact that in the Russian version he was voiced by Sergey Chonishvili? Never mind. It’s the same with Faye Lau, the same with the main villain Aaron Kinnear, whom the agents have been persecuting for several years. The ending turned out to be excellent and unexpected, but everything that happens before it can be skipped (and sometimes even needed) – either empty chatter or stupid screensavers.
⇡ #No wonder they hunted
The passage of the plot takes about eight hours, and in the process you can’t leave New York. So if the comrades who did not buy the add-on call you to complete assignments in Washington, they will have to refuse. The plot seems to be non-linear, but in reality you just choose the order of actions: in order to calculate the location of Kinner, you need to destroy four of his minions. It does not matter who you open the hunt for first, unless you want to quickly get a new skill related to a specific goal.
Handy Kinner actively uses these four exclusive abilities in battles. Someone places their own holographic copies on the location, confusing you and hiding, and as soon as the boss is defeated, you can also fool opponents. Another sets traps that shock all the enemies approaching them. And the third and fourth use Velcro bombs – one explodes, the other sets fire to the target. So far, none of the abilities – except for the holographic blende, and that is debatable – seems too useful.
But even if there were no new skills at all, for The Division fans, the addition would still be worthy of attention. Although the tasks in the missions are the same, again clearing the rooms from a bunch of enemies, protecting something again, destroying something again and shooting again, it’s more fun to perform them in the new scenery than to visit the old ones over and over again. In addition, enemies from the first part, in particular prisoners and cleaners, returned here. The latter still walk with flamethrowers at the ready, and it is still fun to shoot at the cylinders on their backs.
⇡ #Everything is just beginning … probably
After completing the Warlords of New York campaign, you can freely switch between New York and Washington. Ubisoft plans to add new content to both cities so that users do not stay for long in only one of them. There will be additional missions and other entertainment distributed over three seasons, the first of which started on March 10. True, so far the season has been disappointing: the hunt for the first goal is to defend nine milestones, re-pass the four old missions and three liquidations. There is no new content.
Participants in the seasons will be during the year for those who want to dress their character in an increasingly high-quality and fashionable equipment issued for each new level of the local military pass (free of charge if there is an add-on, of course). The Massive team has made many changes to the production system (available to those who did not buy the supplement). What pleases me most is how much easier and simpler descriptions of objects have become.
Take, for example, a high-level protective mask. She has one main characteristic and two usual ones: weapon damage, damage from skills, resistance to explosions, increase in health – everything is not only very clear at one glance at these lines, but now it is also indicated how close the characteristic is to the maximum. If the scale of “damage from critical hits” is not completely filled, then you can find an option even better. And in order not to have to study each subject separately, in the list of things the characteristics are marked with a special icon, which becomes highlighted when the maximum indicator is reached.
Another change affected talents that are now inherent only in bibs, backpacks, and weapons. And the most important innovation is the ability to transfer some feature of the “gear” to the recalibration station for use on another subject, which was previously severely lacking. You no longer have to hold on to a thing, because now, with its destruction, a useful feature will not disappear forever. Brand kits have not gone anywhere – if you wear two or three things from the same manufacturer, you get additional bonuses. Moreover, there is no such thing that a brand produces only a backpack, a bib and a holster – each manufacturer has absolutely all the items of equipment, you just need to find them and get significant increases in armor, damage from a certain type of weapon, or something else.
At the same time, there were some shortcomings, which fans of The Division 2 already write angry posts on social networks. For example, exotic things for some reason have random characteristics, because of which equipment sometimes falls out worse than ordinary “legendaries”. One of Massive’s main goals was to make drop-outs rarer but more valuable, but the system worked imperfectly. Exotic objects end up falling much less frequently, and all the more offensive when you get armor or weapons with weak indicators.
Another problem is the return of unkillable “yellow” opponents, which need to be shot too long. The whole end game in this add-on involves the passage of content on high complexity for the sake of getting better equipment and increased experience in order to unlock seasonal content. For this, directives have been introduced – the ability to complicate the gameplay both on the entire map and in a separate operation. As a result, the enemies have a lot of health, and they love to go non-stop in the direction of the player (and very accurately throw grenades). It is difficult to get pleasure from the process in such a situation.
Over time, at least some of the shortcomings will probably be corrected, as well as numerous bugs, which in addition are a dime a dozen. Either the textures do not have time to load, the enemy models become similar to the figures from the action games of the era of the first PlayStation, then they do not appear at all for a few seconds – you can see on the minimap that they are somewhere nearby, but you have to wait until the enemies materialize. There are even more problems with the sound component – half as if not. The replicas are lost belatedly and because of this they break off at the end, the shooting is not heard at the beginning of the shootout, sometimes the fractions fight in the streets in complete silence …
There was hope that Warlords of New York would become for The Division 2 what The Taken King for Destiny became – large-scale work on bugs, thanks to which a more distinct plot component and a lot of entertainment appeared, which greatly extended the life of the game. It’s hard to say how things will go on and whether the action will remain interesting for a large audience. The number of bugs and strange solutions in the endgame indicate that Massive was in a hurry with the release. The add-on and the redesigned mining system have many advantages, but some miscalculations can greatly harm the game if they are not corrected as soon as possible.
- new atmospheric and beautiful areas that are nice to explore;
- all the same spectacular missions in luxurious scenery;
- a modified mining system and updated features make life easier for players;
- a combat pass with a bunch of useful rewards inspires (for now) repeated runs after the finals.
- the plot still doesn’t give a damn;
- seasons are based on old content – apparently, new missions and entertainments can not be expected;
- opponents are again ready to take pounds of bullets on the chest;
- numerous bugs – some force you to restart tasks from the very beginning.
The scenery is still very beautiful, but the textures often do not have time to load – you see square trees and angular opponents.
The music is great, but, like in the case of graphics, there are a lot of bugs – the sound is constantly late and / or absent in dialogs and shootings.
Single player game
If you are used to playing The Division solo, then there will also be no discomfort. Unless the final boss can tear up nerves.
Running with friends (or even random companions) is still fun. Yes, and the “Dark Zone” has not gone away – now in it more emphasis is placed on PvP, not PvE.
The add-on was clearly created in a hurry – the number of bugs and not the best entertainment in the endgame indicate this. There are great innovations, but whether they are enough is a moot point.
