Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said this in interview RBC-Ukraine.
He noted that Russians are masters of protracted conflicts. As an example, he cited Georgia, as well as Moldova and Transnistria, where Russian troops have been for decades. In addition, the war in Crimea and Donbass has been going on since 2014.
“And I’m worried that a protracted conflict serves Putin’s purposes, because he believes that as long as there is a smoldering or frozen conflict in eastern Ukraine, it will prevent Ukraine from making real progress, progress towards rapprochement with the European Union, with NATO, also progress in the economy.
He knows that if the conflict in eastern Ukraine continues, the resumption will be harder. So I think the biggest risk right now is that his goal (Putin – ed.) is to prolong the conflict. He cannot win a complete victory. But on the other hand, he will just try to drag it out endlessly,” explained Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
