Wages are rising in Limburg and West Flanders: why and what about the other provinces? † MyGuide

JobatThe Belgian earned an average of 3,748 euros gross last year. This is how we learn from Jobat’s brand new Salary Compass. In one province wages went up, in the other employees had to make do with (a little) less. William Visterin, editor-in-chief of Jobat.bezooms in on the results.

“There are some fluctuations, but in general wages remain stable. Only in Brussels, where wages are by far the highest, do we see a relatively larger decrease,” says William Visterin about the comparison between the average gross wages of 2021 and a year earlier, which we can deduce from the Salary Compass. The average gross salary in Brussels last year reached 4,371 euros, compared to 4,533 euros a year earlier. “Know that Brussels employers — compared to other provinces — offer a lot more fringe benefits on average, such as company cars. In the Brussels Region, for example, those cars have improved considerably in one year. That is the general trend in Jobat’s Salary Compass: it is mainly the fringe benefits that keep the wages up.”

“In addition, in the capital you still earn on average more than a fifth more than in Flanders. This is due to the fact that Brussels is home to many headquarters of large companies and large government bodies such as the EU. Often the following applies: the larger the employer — and therefore often the more specialized the jobs — the higher the average wage,” says Visterin.

Flemish Brabant top

In Flanders, an employee earned an average of 3,613 euros gross last year, about 750 euros per month less than in the capital. A year earlier, the average Flemish gross wage was still 3,650 euros. Flemish Brabant still pays the best by far, with 3,823 euros gross per month, more or less status quo compared to 2020. The province of Flemish Brabant also has the strongest increase in percentage compared to five years earlier. Wages rose by no less than 15 percent in that period. Antwerp is the second best student in the class, with about 100 euros less gross per month: 3,723 euros. This is a slight decrease compared to the 3,778 euros a year earlier. The East Flemish complete the podium with 3,548 gross per month, also here as a result of a slight decrease.
