VW is also ending the development of internal combustion engines. But they will pay the electric – Magazine – Car

Under the leadership of Herbert Diessa, the Volkswagen Group sees no other than a purely electric future. This also means the end of investment in internal combustion engines. A new generation will no longer emerge.

By the end of the decade, electric cars should account for up to 70% of Volkswagen’s sales in Europe. That is why the carmaker will cover investments in the development of internal combustion engines.

It was to be expected. The VW Group invests billions of euros in electromobility, so financing the development of internal combustion engines is also extremely inefficient for it. Audi has already announced that it will not develop any new generations. And now the main pillar of the concern – the Volkswagen brand – is joining it. This was confirmed for the German Automobilwoche by Ralf Brandstaetter, Chairman of the Board of Directors. If Europe’s largest carmaker has taken this step, it means only one thing – internal combustion engines have it all figured out.

The current generation of petrol and diesel propulsion units is therefore the latest, although it will not retire so quickly. Volkswagen will further modify the current engines using plug-in hybrid technology to meet essentially the Euro 7 liquidation emission standard, but that will be the end of their career. Further tightening of emission requirements is physically impossible for internal combustion engines. The road leads only through electric cars. These should account for up to 70% of Volkswagen’s European sales by 2030. In China and the USA, their share should be exactly half.

The paradox is that until then, Volkswagen will finance the development of electric cars and electric technologies from the profits from the sale of conventional cars, which, unlike the electric ones, are profitable. The traditional Golf, Passat, T-Roc and Tiguan models will remain on offer. What’s more, by the end of the decade, the carmaker will bring their next generations into the world. The Passat, which will be produced in Bratislava only in the Variant version of the station wagon, should arrive on the market in 2023. We can expect a similar strategy for other Škoda and Seat concern brands.
