The VW Golf GTI is the compact sports car par excellence and goes into its eighth round in summer. Perhaps the last one for the popular athlete? It’s possible, because in summer, in addition to the GTI and its sports brothers GTE and GTD (see box), the ID.3 – VW’s first model on the new MEB electric platform – and nothing less than the new bestseller of the future for Wolfsburg.

But in the eighth generation, the Golf does everything it can, becomes ultra-modern and networked like never before. The GTI is also in no way inferior: the sports model with a huge air intake in honeycomb design and five fog lamp segments on each side stands out from the normal Golf. There is also an LED daytime running light strip that runs across the entire width of the front between the lights.

Two tailpipes are standard
The GTI, which sits 15 millimeters above the asphalt, has 17-inch rims as standard, and 18- or 19-inch models are optionally available. The discreet rear spoiler on the roof edge, which provides downforce, is just as much a part of the sports version as the dual-flow exhaust system.
–
As in the new Golf 8, there are hardly any buttons inside, but lots of digital displays and the large infotainment system, which is operated intuitively via voice or touch controls. Typical GTI are sport seats with a checked pattern, GTI logos and – if the GTI comes as a hand switch – a gear stick with a golf ball look. Otherwise, the version with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission has a short stub as in the standard Golf plus shift paddles on the sports steering wheel.
VW is still covered in terms of performance data, starting from the predecessor, the new GTI should probably need just over six seconds for the sprint to 100 km / h and achieve top speed of 250 km / h. At a later date, however, there will be a top version of the new Golf GTI, which should then come to 300 hp. Prices for the new GTI have not yet been fixed.

New edition of the sporty golf trios: the plug-in hybrid GTE (left), gasoline GTI (middle) and GTD with turbodiesel.

As with its predecessor, the VW Golf 8 will be available in two other GT versions. In the GTE plug-in hybrid sports car, a 1.4-l TSI (150 hp) is combined with an electric motor. As with the GTI, the result is 245 HP and 400 Nm system performance and, thanks to the 13 kWh battery in the underbody, up to 60 E kilometers. However, the GTE dispenses with a deeper sports suspension and is therefore more designed for comfort. Instead of red, there are blue accents on the part-time Stromer and a clean rear end without a tailpipe. As a further Golf GT variant, the Sport Diesel GTD will be available from summer. The 2.0 l TDI is said to be particularly clean thanks to VW’s new double adblue injection (called twindosing) and, with 200 hp and 400 Nm, also balances more power than the predecessor on the front axle. Market launch for GTE and GTD is the same as for the GTI in summer, prices have not yet been fixed.
