VVD: No increased radiation detected in Latvia due to technical problems at Astravjec nuclear power plant – Latvia – News

As reported, the Astravyez NPP in Belarus has temporarily suspended electricity production due to technical problems.

Kļaveniece pointed out that the SES Radiation Safety Center monitors the systems of both Latvian and European radiation monitoring stations, as well as evaluates the available information more intensively. Latvian radiation monitoring stations do not currently show elevated radiation measurements.

The SES Radiation Safety Center requested the Emergency Management and Response Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus to provide additional information on the news in the press that on November 9, the Astravjez NPP was found to need to replace electrical measuring equipment.

According to the information provided to Latvia by the Emergency Management and Response Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus on Tuesday, during tests of the first power unit of the Astravyez NPP, the need to replace electrical measuring equipment was identified. This stage ensures the operating modes of the nuclear reactor at different power levels, ie up to 50% of the maximum power, as well as the stability of the power system operation is checked. The Belarusian side has noted that the said replacement of measuring equipment does not affect the radiation safety and nuclear safety of the nuclear power plant, the representative of the SES said.

The SES further informed that the International Atomic Energy Agency’s single information exchange system for incidents and accidents has not received information on the situation at the Astravjec NPP.

As reported, the Belarusian Ministry of Energy announced on Monday night that the resumption of electricity production required the replacement of “certain equipment”, but the reasons were not revealed.

The NPP press service could not name the time when it was planned to resume electricity production.

Meanwhile, the Belarusian media report that the turbine of the first power unit of the NPP had to be stopped on Sunday due to the failure of transformers in one of the units.

It is emphasized that the incident did not pose a threat of radioactivity leakage.

Belarus reportedly commissioned the newly built Astravyez NPP last Tuesday, but it was officially opened on Saturday by incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko.

The NPP was built by the Russian company Rosatom and Moscow has provided a $ 10 billion loan to finance it.
