Vote wiser, choose Mona Keijzer – The Daily Standard

The CDA is a party that has wandered around the Binnenhof in recent years. There was no real vision, the party sometimes voted with the left and sometimes with the right and a CDA file did not exist. But change is on the horizon; the party leader elections will take place shortly – where the CDA should choose the right.

Hugo de Jonge, Martijn van Helvert, Mona Keijzer and Pieter Omtzigt compete for the position as list leader of the CDA, although van Helvert is not a serious candidate in view of his negligible fame. A left-wing clown, a pragmatic file biter and the nationalist, self-proclaimed right-wing ‘crown princess’ are then left.

Of the 3 Hugo de Jonge falls in terms of fitness immediately. De Jonge seems to be busy with which shoes he should wear earlier and more often than that he comes up with real solutions that help the Dutch move forward. The minister has been calling for less market forces in healthcare – which is a bad plan – for a year, but a proposal to realize this has been missing for a year. In addition, a left-Christian direction from an electoral point of view is also not wise. After all, then the CDA would have to compete with the ChristenUnie, which looks strong according to the polls. Precisely at a time when the CDA is 30 seats behind the VVD, taking such risks is by far the worst option.

That de Jonge can be chosen is realistic, because active CDA members are more left-oriented than the average CDA voters. In a party cartel-like manner, a less popular, left-wing party leader could still be elected.

A right-wing CDA on the other hand can accommodate voters disappointed by the VVD and Forum. In a democracy it is desirable if the will of the people is represented in parliament. By taking the right-hand turn, the CDA will therefore also please democracy – a democracy that has been inadequate for too long and too often.

File eater Omtzigt, a respected Member of Parliament, and the right-wing conservative Mona Keijzer then remain. At first sight Omtzigt seems to be a better list leader between the two, but that is not so bad. Omtzigt is a Member of Parliament who loses himself in the most substantive files. Thanks to Omtzigt, the allowance affair has been revealed and a Maltese prime minister has stepped down – an achievement no one can match. That is precisely why it is to keep the residents of The Hague in the Chamber. Not having Omtzigt as an auditor is a loss to the European Union, the House of Representatives and those who have been duped by unlawful government actions, something that the Netherlands cannot endure at such a difficult time.

It is also questionable whether Omtzigt has an actual political vision. In TV shows and interviews, he takes a conservative stance and speaks in general: “… I think that the government should work for its citizens and not the other way around.” Mona Keijzer then seems the only good, remaining candidate for the party leader, certainly in a possible coalition with Forum for Democracy.

Only Mona Keijzer will be able to keep Thierry Baudet in check. For example, Keijzer stated: “I would say to Baudet: go rinse your mouth.” Although Thierry Baudet presents constructive solutions and provides valid criticism, he can be skewed. A person, even a woman, who can restrain him and address the nation when it matters is fit to sit in the Turret. She will be a Margaret Thatcher.
