FC St. Gallen can actually look back on a successful season. But shortly before the last game against Master YB, there was a stir in Eastern Switzerland. Ioannis Amanatidis (38), assistant to the aspens since January 2019, immediately throws the beggar into surprise. “I had a great and successful time here, but now is the time to go,” the ex-Nati player from Greece told the “kicker”.

Sports director Alain Sutter offered Amanatidis an offer to extend the contract – but only by one year. “I refused,” says the ex-professional. “The reason for the one-year offer is the uncertain financial future of the club.” Sutter and trainer Peter Zeidler are known to have recently signed a new contract until 2025. That somehow doesn’t go together. I see no appreciation for my work, »comments Amanatidis.

Forward have developed well
In addition to his work as an assistant coach, the former Bundesliga striker also looked after the FCSG strikers. For example, he was able to advance an Ermedin Demirovic, who has scored 14 league goals and will play for Freiburg next season. “Obviously it wasn’t that bad,” says Amanatidis, “others like Itten, Babic or Muheim have also developed well.”

He is proud of what the aspens have shown in recent months. «We played a sensational round with our mini budget, became runner-up, stood up to the big players, were allowed to compete in Europe and promoted the club and the region. Being part of this success story makes me a little proud, ”says Amanatidis.

Where he will go now, he leaves open. Everything was not yet ready to be said. I don’t let myself be rushed, I want to make the right choice. »

Other staff members stay
In contrast, goalie coach Stefano Razzetti extended in St. Gallen. The 48-year-old stays for two more years. Game analyst Eduard Schmidt has also signed a new two-year contract. Boro Kuzmanovic will also continue to be part of the team of coach Peter Zeidler. The assistant coach stays another year.
