Von der Leyen rows back – how Johnson won the vaccine battle against the EU – politics abroad

He only needs two phone calls …

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has apparently brought EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (62) to withdraw her vaccine delivery stop to Great Britain in a very short time.

The EU had previously announced that it did not want to export 3.5 million doses of Biontech vaccine from Belgium to Great Britain – delivery across the inner-Irish border should also be prevented.

Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol to the Brexit Agreement should be used for this. This would mean a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Boris Johnson called an emergency meeting of his cabinet and then telephoned EU Commission President von der Leyen. He warned that such an export stop would jeopardize the inner-Irish peace process.

Johnson and von der Leyen telephoned loudly “Daily Mail“Twice within 30 minutes on the subject. The EU Commission President finally gave in and described the talks with the British Prime Minister as “constructive”.

Johnson pointed out in the phone call that the planned export stop from the EU would mean that millions of British pensioners would not get their second dose of vaccine.

In a message on Twitter, von der Leyen rowed mightily back from her tough course.
