Volvo Ghent shows first C40 and shifts gear higher…

The first C40 rolled off the production line at Volvo Ghent on Thursday. It is the second electric model that has been awarded to the Belgian factory, with which the Ghent site shows itself to be a pioneer within the Sino-Swedish group. Next year, more than half of the cars produced in Ghent will be electric.

“It goes fast, hehe?” said Prime Minister Alexander De Croo after driving the first C40 off the line. “A few years ago people didn’t talk about electric cars. Here they know that this is the way to build cars in the future.”

De Croo is enthusiastic about the new C40 – a light blue one. “No exhaust fumes, no noise and very modern.”

The Ghent factory is one of two car manufacturers that have already switched to the production of electric vehicles in our country. “With this we will perpetuate the production of electric cars in our country”, it sounded.

The arrival of the C40 is accompanied by a large recruitment wave in Ghent. The Ghent factory – one of the most important industrial employers in Flanders – is looking for 500 new employees and about 700 temporary workers can be considered for a permanent contract.

The presence of a battery factory also means that the group has a lot of potential in the future to also produce future models. Although the maximum capacity with around 6,500 employees has actually been reached today.
