Volkswagen: N is also ID.4 on the belt

– With ID.4, Volkswagen is expanding its offering with an electric car in the segment that is growing fastest in the world – the class for the compact SUVs, says Ralf Brandstätter, director of Volkswagen.

According to ID.3, this is the second car on the modular electrical platform (MEB). The car will be built and sold in Europe, but later also in China and the USA.

– In this way, we scale the MEB platform for the whole world and provide the business economic basis for the success of our ID family, Brandstätter continues.

Board member of Volkswagen with responsibility for e-mobility, Thomas Ulbrich, says that Volkswagen’s change towards e-mobility goes exactly according to schedule:

– The start of production of ID.4 now, given the great societal challenges of recent months, is an unusually great achievement. I therefore praise and thank the entire team of Volkswagen in Saxony, and all the members of the ID teams. Where incinerators were built a short time ago, the other model in the ID family is already rolling off the assembly line, says Ulbrich.

The factory in Zwickau plays a key role in the system changes towards electric mobility: For the first time, a large car factory has been completely rebuilt to only produce electric cars. Volkswagen has invested 1.2 billion euros in this, and all conversions will be completed before the end of the year, exactly according to plan.

2021 will be the first all-electric production year in Zwickau. Then around 300,000 cars will be built on the MEB platform.

According to VW, the factory will be the largest and most high-performance electric car factory in Europe, while at the same time taking a leading role in the changes Volkswagen is implementing worldwide.

The production of the e-SUV is also being prepared at a high pace in other parts of the world. The factory in Chinese Anting is already in pre-series production, and in Chattanooga (USA) production of ID.4 will start in 2022.

ID.4 is built as an electric car from scratch, so that the benefits of electric propulsion can be fully utilized.

With a Cw value of 0.28 and a scalable battery system, ID.4 achieves ranges of over 500 km (WLTP). In addition, the car gets a lot of space inside.

At launch, the SUV will be rear-wheel drive, but electric four-wheel drive will also come.

The placement of the battery in the sandwich construction under the floor provides a low and thus driving dynamically favorable center of gravity and even weight distribution between the axles.

ID.4 is an important milestone for Volkswagen on the road to achieving the climate goals in the Paris Agreement: By 2050, the group will be completely CO2-neutral.

The production in Zwickau is CO2-neutral, so the cars are handed over to customers without a CO2 footprint. The energy-intensive battery production, for example, is done 100% with electricity from renewable sources.

With Norwegian hydropower, the chances are good that the car can remain CO2-neutral throughout the life cycle.
