Vitamin K deficiency may favor severe cases

Dutch scientists, in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Research Institute in Maastricht in the Netherlands, carried out a month-long study from March 12 to April 11 on two groups of individuals, one composed of 134 people with severe form of Covid-19 and hospitalized in Nijmegen and the other made up of 184 healthy people.

Through this study, scientists may have found a correlation between the low vitamin K and the severe form of coronavirus. Indeed, the characteristics of the most serious form of the Covid-19 is the blood clotting and breakdown of elastic fibers in the lungs. However, vitamin K, present in foods such as eggs, spinach, broccoli and certain cheeses, is essential for the production of proteins regulating coagulation as reported by Guardian.

Scientists have observed a deficiency of this vitamin in hospitalized or dead patients followed up in the study and are now seeking funding to set up a clinical trial including taking vitamin K to verify their results.
