Vitamin D Deficiency Increases Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A study called deficiency vitamin D can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Research published in Molecular Nutrition Food Research states that vitamin D deficiency in mice causes cardiac dysfunction by myocardial insulin resistance.

This study looked at the cause-and-effect relationship between vitamin D deficiency and cardiometabolic disorders. In this study, launching Express, male rats were fed a normal diet, deficient in vitamin D, or a high-fat and high-fructose diet for a total of 20 weeks.

Johns Hopkins Medicine says a growing body of research shows vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for heart attack, congestive heart failure, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), stroke, and conditions associated with cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. They explain that vitamin D acts as a hormone, which regulates more than 200 genes throughout the body.

Meanwhile, Dr. Erin Michos, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Women’s Cardiovascular Health, reviewed and contributed a wealth of data on vitamin D deficiency and the heart. He states increasing vitamin D levels lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Brent Muhlestein, co-director of cardiovascular research at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute, said the study provides a new direction in which patients may best benefit from taking vitamin D supplements.

“While it is possible that patients may benefit in some way from achieving higher blood vitamin D levels, new information suggests the greatest benefit for the heart is likely to occur among patients whose vitamin D levels are below 15ng/ml,” Muhlestein said. .

“Currently we are continuing to study vitamin D and heart, we hope to eventually get enough information to tell all patients specifically what to do to reduce heart risk as much as possible.”

The UK Department of Health recommends taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year if:

-Not often outdoors
-Being in an institution such as a nursing home
-Usually wears clothes that cover most of the skin when outdoors

They also remind not to consume more than the recommended dose. “Consuming too many vitamin D supplements over a long period of time can cause too much calcium to build up in the body (hypercalcemia). This can weaken bones and damage the kidneys and heart,” the NHS said.
