Vitamin C capsules detected as ‘Class I carcinogen’ Taipei City Health Bureau prosecutes operator – Food and Drug Stop Watching – Free Health

[Reporter Cai Yahua/Taipei Report]Taipei City Health Bureau received a project from Pingtung County Health Bureau to implement the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare to investigate health food OEM “Huichang Industrial Company” and purchased the Capsule shell “HPMC Capsule” from China. It was found to contain 571.466 mg/kg of ethylene oxide (hereinafter referred to as ETO). Some capsule shells were used to produce L-Vitamin C capsules, which were delivered to Fine Life Company in a compensation plan sale.

The Health Bureau emphasized that ETO is a first-class carcinogen recognized by the International Organization for Research on Cancer. The detected concentration of the capsule shell used by Huichang company may cause harm to human health. Paragraph 3 and Article 49 stipulate that the case should be transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office for investigation to find out the cause.

The Health Bureau said the case was the “111 Annual Inspection Project of Health Food, Domestic Vitamin Tablet Capsule Food and Domestic Special Nutrition Food Source Suppliers” implemented by the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare by the Pingtung County Government Health Bureau. The Pingtung Branch of the company (Changzhi Town, Pingtung County) checked, randomly tested, and found that the capsule shell contained 571.466 mg/kg of ethylene oxide. The standard is that it cannot be detected.

The Health Bureau pointed out that, according to statistics, the industry purchased a total of 100,000 capsules, of which 46,000 were used to make “L-vitamin C capsules (effective date: July 21, 2024)” and delivered to Fine Life Enterprise Co. ., Ltd. For sale, after deducting production losses and random inspections, the remaining empty capsule shells and other finished products were sealed in Pingtung factory by the County Government Health Bureau Pingtung.

The Health Bureau said the seller, Fine Living, has filed a recall announcement and proposed a consumer compensation plan.
