Viruses introduced protection against new viruses in mice


Scientists at Tokyo Medical and Dental University found that two mouse genes left over from a viral infection millions of years ago evolved to help protect the brain from new infections. These are Rtl5 / Rtl6 retrotransposons which encode microglial proteins.
