Virus outbreak at Tönnies probably not skipped

Updated June 28, 2020, 12:49 p.m.

Warendorf (dpa) – After the massive corona outbreak at the Tönnies meat company in the Gütersloh district, the neighboring district of Warendorf has so far seen no signs of the virus spreading to the rest of the population.

“The trend so far shows that that Virus did not jump to the general population, “explained district administrator Olaf Gericke (CDU) late Saturday evening. According to the district, only two of the 4491 corona tests were positive, which were evaluated by Saturday afternoon in the test centers Oelde and Ahlen and by doctors.

The district of Gütersloh, on the other hand, had announced on Saturday evening that the number of infected people in the rest of the population had increased “noticeably”. Accordingly, in the past seven days to Friday, 75 people who are not related to the company were tested positive for the virus. That was 28 more than in the same period the previous day.

According to the information, the corona outbreak in the nearby Rheda-Wiedenbrück meat factory in the Gütersloh district also affects more than 200 Tönnies employees who lived in the Warendorf district and here in particular in the city of Oelde. Both circles are again subject to severe restrictions in public life, which are initially limited to June 30. Therefore, it must be decided on Tuesday at the latest whether the conditions expire or have to be extended.

The district of Warendorf said it had carried out tests in nursing homes, with harvest helpers and in slaughterhouses and meat factories (not yet completed) – regardless of the voluntary series tests by the population. “There are over 7000 results of this – all were negative,” it said on Saturday evening.

The district administrator and the mayor of Oelde, Karl-Friedrich Knop, thanked Kreis for the “varied and often voluntary support in this unusual situation.” Creating such large test capacities in a very short time was a logistical masterpiece.
