Virus kills 36,674 people and infects nearly 760,000 worldwide

The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed at least 36,674 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report by the agency to AFP, at 19:00 today, from official sources in the countries.

According to data collected by the French news agency, more than 757,940 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 184 countries and territories since the epidemic began last December in China.

AFP warns, however, that the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries now testing only those cases that require hospital care.

Among these cases, at least 148,700 are now considered cured.

Since the count made at 19:00 on Sunday, 3,430 new deaths and 60,195 new cases have occurred worldwide.

The countries with the most deaths in the last 24 hours were Italy and Spain, with 812 new deaths each, and the United States (477).

Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus-related death in late February, currently has 11,591 deaths, for 101,739 cases, with 812 deaths and 4,050 new cases announced today, at a time when 14,620 people are considered cured by Italian authorities.

In number of cases, the United States is the country most affected, with 153,246 contaminations officially listed, including 2,828 deaths and 5,545 cures.

Since Sunday, at 19:00, Angola announced the first deaths related to the covid-19 disease, while Botswana announced the diagnosis of the first cases.

Europe totaled 26,543 deaths at 19:00 today, for 413,832 cases, Asia 3,837 deaths (106,891 cases), the United States and Canada 2,898 deaths (160,532 cases), in the Middle East 2,856 deaths (51,377 cases), Latin America and Caribbean 357 deaths (15,334 cases), Africa 163 deaths (5,113 cases) and Oceania 20 deaths (4,865 cases).

This report was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).

In Portugal, according to the balance made today by the Directorate-General for Health, there were 140 deaths, 21 more than the day before (+ 17.6%), and 6,408 cases of confirmed infections, which represents an increase of 446 in compared to Sunday (+ 7.5%).
