The Polish embassy in Iceland confirmed that three Poles were killed in a fire in the center of the capital of the country. Two other people were seriously injured. It has been known for years that the building did not meet any safety standards. Residents were rescuing themselves from the fire by jumping from the windows.
According to the Icelandic police, one person has been arrested. This is due to suspicions that the cause of the fire that broke out on Thursday could have been arson. However, this is not the only version assumed in the investigation, because the building was in terrible condition.
The wooden building in the old part of the city at Braeoraborgarstigur 1 belonged to the temporary agency HD Verk ehf. It is not known exactly how many people have actually stayed at home recently. According to the official register, a total of 73 people lived in it. 28 Poles, a similar number of Latvians, as well as Lithuanians, Romanians and one citizen of Iceland and Spain.
