Respond to photos viral view of green light in the sky Tumpeng Menoreh, Kulon Progo Yogyakarta Andi Pangerang, a researcher at the BRIN Lapan Space Science Center, said that the sight of the aurora had never happened in Indonesia.
“As far as I know, aurora only occurs at the North and South Poles,” Andi said when contacted Kompas.com, Friday (1/10/2021).
Furthermore, he said, the occurrence of the aurora phenomenon at the North Pole and South Pole cannot happen every day.
Because it is known to only occur at the North and South poles, the aurora is also known as the polar light.
Aurora is a natural phenomenon that produces glowing beams of light and seems to dance in the night sky in the ionosphere layer.
“And that too (the aurora occurs) is caused by the interaction between storms and solar winds with the Earth’s magnetic field, which is also called the magnosphere layer,” he explained.
Meanwhile, when asked further whether there could be other types besides the aurora than the appearance of beautiful colors in the night sky.
Andi said that as far as he knew there was no other term or other type besides aurora to denote the colorful lights dancing in the night sky.
Even if they are similar, he said, they are more of a fire rainbow. However, the color is not as monotonous as the photo phenomenon viral the aurora in the Tumpeng Menoreh sky, because the fire rainbow is more colorful like a rainbow.
Fire rainbow or rainbow fire itself is caused by sunlight refracted by cirrus clouds located at 10 km from the earth’s surface which contains more ice crystals.
“Hopefully this image is not edited,” he said.
“Even if (the Tumpeng Menoreh aurora) is not edited. There is a possibility of an effect from nightmode when shooting,” he added.
