Violence and hatred: This attack could have consequences

The extent of the suspected killer’s connections to the violent networks of right-wing extremism is still under investigation.

Elon Musk spreads a crude thesis about the attack

Ironically, the richest man in the world and confessed Republican voter Elon Musk spread a crude conspiracy theory about the incident at Nancy Pelosi’s private home on his newly acquired Twitter social media platform. Under a public message from former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Musk tweeted: “There’s a small chance there’s more to this story than meets the eye.”

Fake news spread: Twitter owner Elon Musk. (What: what: archive.org)

To do so, he linked the article from a website known for unfounded conspiracy content. After hours of protesting this claim, the new Twitter owner deleted his tweet without further comment. Instead of apologizing, Musk shortly thereafter lashed out at the New York Times newspaper, which had reported false information about him, and in turn accused him of false news.

Lying breeds anger and violence

The debate on physical aggression in the private home of a member of parliament hits the US particularly sharply just before the mid-term elections. Especially in hard-fought states, people fear possible outbursts of violence. The warm atmosphere is also fueled by candidates like Republican government candidate Kari Lake in Arizona, who announced in advance that they would only recognize one victory in the election.

Appeals for a civil war are already circulating on websites and social networks such as Reddit, Parler, Telegram, Gab.ai and Truth Social, as reported by the non-governmental organization Soufan Center (TSC). The main justification for possible violence is said to be the lie advanced by Donald Trump and his Republican loyalists about electoral fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The tenor: If the Democrats are still cheating, then they must defend themselves with violence.

For the besieged state of Pennsylvania, former US President Donald Trump was spreading unproven rumors on his “Truth Social” platform before election day that allegedly “240,000 unverified ballots” had been sent there. Democrats, Trump said, would play the same game as the presidential election. He was happy that “some great patriots” would be monitoring the alleged events.
