“Violence against officials”: Most expensive defender in the world arrested

Harry Maguire is the most expensive defender in the world, but now the professional footballer has to deal with different opponents than usual: After a fight, he was taken away in handcuffs on a Greek island. And then the trouble really starts.

This vacation was planned differently: After an attack on a police officer on the Greek holiday island of Mykonos, Harry Maguire, captain of the English soccer champions Manchester United, was arrested. The officers were originally called in to end a brawl between two groups of tourists. “The football player insulted a police officer and then hit him,” said a spokesman for the Greek TV station ERT.

The BBC reports that the national player was then taken away in handcuffs and taken to the police station with two compatriots. There, too, the three-man group did not want to calm down at first, they “fought violently and pushed and hit three officers,” as the police explained. One of the three tried to “offer money so that the matter would not be pursued”.

“Violence against officials”

The statement goes on to say that the allegations against the group around the soccer star were “violence against officials, disobedience, assault, insult and attempted bribery of an official”. Maguire’s club have since confirmed the incident: “The club is aware of an incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night,” United said in a statement. “We are in contact with him and he is working fully with the Greek authorities.”

Konstantinos Darivas, lawyer for the 26-time international, said his client denied the allegations that he was “fully convinced that he will be released without charge on Saturday”. Manchester failed in the semi-finals of the Europa League at Sevilla FC last weekend, after which the 27-year-old Maguire went on vacation to the Greek holiday island – together with his fiancée and two siblings.

Before the season Harry Maguire had moved from Leicester City to the English record champions. A transfer fee of 80 million pounds (around 87 million euros) made him the most expensive defender in the world. In the past season he did not miss any of the 38 premier league games this season and helped ensure that his new club finished third behind Liverpool FC and local rivals Manchester City.
