Vincent van Gogh in podcast The psychological pandemic | Peel and Maas

On Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year, the KRO-NCRV will launch the podcast De psychic pandemic together with NPO Radio 1.

Journalist Tom Veldhuijzen dives into the world of mental health care and investigates the consequences of two years of the corona pandemic on the mental state of the Netherlands. It is in the news almost daily: the mental consequences of corona are major, affect a huge number of different groups, and will undoubtedly continue to have an effect for a long time to come. According to the CBS, the number of young people with mental health problems has risen from 12 percent before the pandemic to 24 percent now.

Director René Adriaanse of Vincent van Gogh in Venray says: “When Tom approached us to participate in this podcast, we said ‘yes’ wholeheartedly. It has become a beautiful, valuable insight into the world of mental health. And especially important is the link that Tom always makes to how you can become more mentally resilient yourself.”

Veldhuijzen starts at the GGZ location in Venray, a center with an extensive range of treatment for youth, adults and the elderly. From basic mental health care to highly specialized treatments. He speaks on the spot with patients and treating staff from different departments, experiences the impact of corona in the treatments and in the minds of the patients. Hi is also undergoing a number of therapies herself. How is his own mental state after two years of pandemic? In his own environment he saw many people languishing, and something very violent happened to one of his housemates. How do experts think he got through this on his own?

In this podcast, the journalist also actively searches for ways to become more mentally resilient in all the conversations he has. What can we do to also overcome the mental pandemic?

The podcast The psychological pandemic can be heard from Monday 17 January at KRO-NCRV on NPO Radio 1 via the link www.nporadio1.nl/podcasts/de-psychische-pandemie
