The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) publishes an overview of figures on the corona crisis in the Netherlands every day. NU.nl brings together the most figures that are now known (Saturday 23 May) in five graphs.
RIVM reports 23 new deaths and ten new hospital admissions
In the daily update of Saturday, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reports 23 new deaths and ten new hospital admissions. This is slightly more than Friday, when nine new admissions reported the lowest number of hospital admissions in almost ten weeks. The number of new deaths (13) was also relatively small.
This week’s numbers may have been influenced by Ascension Day. Many agencies then work with weekend schedules, and the low staffing means that RIVM later receives reports of deaths and admissions than usual. Last week, RIVM reported 35 admissions and 53 deaths.
A total of 11,659 persons were or have been hospitalized. 5,811 Dutch people died from the consequences of the coronavirus.
Since 8 May, RIVM only lists new hospital admissions in which the admission members are the coronavirus. Patients who are admitted for another reason and who also appear to have COVID-19 during a screening are only added to the total number of reports of hospital admissions.
Substantial decrease in corona patients on IC
The number of Dutch corona patients in intensive care (IC) has further decreased to 227: a significant decrease compared to yesterday, when 252 corona patients were still on IC.
Of the Dutch corona patients, 226 people are in the intensive care unit of Dutch hospitals. There is still one person in intensive care in Germany.
According to chairman Ernst Kuipers of the National Acute Care Network, the current decline is in line with expectations. “The number of new COVID-ic admissions per day is currently very low. This gives us more and more space for resuming other care.”
The provinces of South and North Holland, North Brabant, Gelderland and Limburg were the hardest hit
Gelderland, Limburg, North Brabant and South and North Holland still have the most number of infections and hospital admissions.
The map below shows the total number of hospital admissions per 100,000 inhabitants per municipality, especially East Brabant and North Limburg appear to be the most affected.

Six in ten deaths were in the 75 to 89 age group
Six in ten deceased corona patients were aged between 75 and 89 years. Within that age group, 84 to 89-year-olds are most affected, with nearly 1,300 deaths.
Figures from RIVM (blue stands for hospital admissions, red for deaths) show that the youngest person who died in the Netherlands from the consequences of the coronavirus was eighteen or nineteen years old. According to the RIVM, this person had underlying health problems.
Women tested positive more often, but more men died
More than 28,000 women have so far been tested positive for the coronavirus, compared to more than 16,000 men. However, more men (7,133) than women (4,518) were admitted to hospitals, and 55.4 percent of corona patients who died were male.
More women may be infected because they are overrepresented in health care professions. Half of the infected care workers are under 45 years old.
The cabinet expanded the test capacity at the beginning of April, allowing health care workers to have themselves tested more often. Since then, more women than men have tested positive for the coronavirus, while previously this ratio was about the same.
