Cheap Flights in Vienna Face Headwinds: Airport Boss Addresses Rising costs
Published: October 26, 2023
Vienna may soon see fewer budget airline options as both Wizz Air and Ryanair have scaled back their offerings. the news comes after Vienna Airport boss, Julian Jäger, appeared on the ZIB2 program to discuss the challenges facing low-cost carriers operating at the airport.
Airlines cite high operating costs at Vienna Airport, including air traffic tax and airport fees, as the primary reason for reducing service. These costs are making it increasingly arduous to maintain competitive fares.
Filling the Gap After NikiS Collapse
Both Wizz Air and Ryanair entered the Vienna market in 2018 following the bankruptcy of Niki, a subsidiary of Air Berlin. Thay aimed to capitalize on the market gap left by Niki’s demise, offering passengers temporarily very cheap tickets. Ryanair’s entry involved acquiring Laudamotion, the airline founded by the late Niki Lauda. However, this resulted in a competitive struggle for market share.
While Wizz Air has indicated potential for a full withdrawal, Ryanair has stated it does not plan to leave Vienna entirely.
“The flight levy is a real competitive disadvantage.”
Julian Jäger, Vienna Airport Boss
The Austrian hotel association has expressed concern over the potential loss of these airlines. However, aviation experts remain relatively optimistic, noting that demand for travel to Vienna remains strong.
Jäger acknowledged the situation as “unpleasant,” emphasizing that the flight levy places Vienna at a disadvantage compared to other European destinations. He noted that while Vienna’s fees are higher than those in Southern European airports, they remain competitive with those in Western European cities like those in germany, due to the higher level of service provided.
The debate highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining competitive air travel options and covering the costs of airport infrastructure and taxes.
